Experience the magical atmosphere of one of Manchester’s oldest buildings on a self-led tour of its secret staircases, hidden passageways and closed doors – all open for you to discover and explore in your own time and without a guide.

A rare opportunity to wander freely through the beautiful medieval buildings and the unique seventeenth-century library at your own pace. Experience the mystery and atmosphere of the dark stone cloisters, the panelled rooms and the chained library without the pressure of time or the formality of a guided tour. Take your own route round the buildings, linger among the bookshelves and sit and read at the table where Karl Marx worked to overthrow capitalism: with almost six hundred years of history hidden within the walls, there will definitely be something new to explore.

The historic library is up a short flight of stairs and the site is therefore only partially accessible to wheelchair users, prams and pushchairs. A limited number of disabled parking spaces are available – please phone to make arrangements if you would like to make use of these.

Max 20 people per tour/session. Allow about an hour but stay as long as you like. This is a special building with a magical atmosphere and we hope that visitors will keep noise levels to a minimum in order to preserve this as much as possible. Please also note that we will be keeping light levels low, and some areas are narrow with uneven floors, so please take care when moving around the building.

Admission is free but booking is essential. Please book via Eventbrite here
