Bach’s Matthäuspassion

  • Saturday 2 April 2022
  • The Stoller Hall
  • £24.50

Part of our Sounds of Nature programme

On 11 April 1727, probably the most monumental of Bach’s works was performed in St Thomas’ Church, Leipzig: the St Matthew Passion. With the musical forces of both churches at his disposal, he was able to bring together two choirs which included soloists, plus a separate soprano ripieno chorus, supported by a double orchestra. To celebrate their 50th anniversary, the William Byrd Singers will perform this incredible piece for the first time.

Founded in 1970 by Dr John Coope MBE, the Byrds’ first conductor was the late Stephen Wilkinson MBE who retired in 2009 at the age of 90 to concentrate on composing and arranging. The Byrds were delighted that he wished to pass the baton to Keith Orrell, who sang with the Byrds, and has a very individual dynamic & vibrant choral personality. The Byrds were deeply saddened when Stephen died in August 2021 at the age of 102, but continue to honour his legacy by maintaining the standard of excellence that he established.

The Byrds are delighted to welcome soloists Peter Harvey, Elin Manahan Thomas, Tim Morgan, Nicholas Mulroy, Damian O’Keeffe and Nick Pritchard; as well as the Choir of Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Atherton; and the 18th Century Sinfonia. Do join us to celebrate our 50th season!
