Lunchtime Talk with Verônica Calsoni | Pamphlet Wars: Roger L’Estrange and Printed Polemic in Restoration England

  • Wednesday 3 April 2019 - 1pm - 1.45pm
  • Baronial Hall
  • Free - no booking required

Verônica is investigating how clandestine and illegal printing trades operated in the Restoration era, using our collection of early modern printed books and ephemera. In her talk she’ll introduce the character of Roger L’Estrange, a censor to the press, who not only seized seditious texts but exploited the power of the press to publish his own replies. Chetham’s Library houses many of L’Estrange’s books, and Veronica will be showing materials from the collection as part of the talk.

With PhD student Verônica Calsoni (University of Sao Paulo & The Sao Paulo Research Foundation and Visiting Research Fellow, Goldsmiths College & Chetham’s Library).
