The Art Treasures of Great Britain exhibition held in Manchester in 1857 displayed over 16,000 works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, prints and objects. It remains the largest art exhibition ever to be held in the UK and attracted 1.3 million visitors over a five-month period.
The Art Treasures Examiner was an illustrated weekly periodical published over the life of the exhibition, which could then be assembled into a whole. The work includes reproductions and critical appreciation of many of the works on show.
