After your family and friends, please consider a gift to Chetham’s Library in your will.
You may not know that it is thanks to a generous legacy left by Humphrey Chetham that Chetham’s Library exists today. We will never know Humphrey Chetham’s thoughts as he wrote into his will a bequest to found a library for the use of “scholars and others well affected”. He certainly could not have foreseen the incredible impact he would have on thousands of scholars in the 350 years since, or have anticipated that Chetham’s Library would one day be the oldest public library in the English speaking world. But he did have that impact, and his legacy lives on.
As a registered charity, Chetham’s Library relies on the support of donors like Humphrey Chetham to ensure that we remain a place of historical and scholarly importance.
