Chetham’s Library is an independent charity, and we rely on the generosity of your donation to preserve and maintain this significant resource. Public support is vital to our long-term survival, and will ensure that this remarkable institution remains open and accessible to all. Your gift will help bring the collections to life and make a real and lasting impact on the future of the Library.
Conservation and Preservation
Chetham’s Library holds collections of over 250,000 items, including books, prints, ephemera, archives, maps, photographs and manuscripts. To ensure they continue to be enjoyed for many more years to come, we must regularly undertake conservation work on items in need of care. The average cost to conserve just one book is around £65 – a sum that can quickly grow when dealing with the rarest and most unique items in the collections.
Arts and Culture
Chetham’s Library continues to deliver a diverse programme of arts and cultural activities, such as our recent exhibition of drawings from Simon Grennan’s new book Drawing in Drag by Marie Duval. We collaborate with artists to enhance our collections and buildings, and highlight aspects that may never before have been seen by our audiences. Support towards our exhibition programme is essential to ensure that we engage new and existing audiences and that the Library’s treasures continue to be discovered and explored.
Digitisation and Access
Enabling access to our collections is an important part of our purpose as a free public library. We digitise as much of our collections as possible to ensure that they can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter where in the world they are. We also take our collections out into communities to raise awareness and understanding of these valued items. Support for Digitisation and Access will enable more and more people to discover the history that our collections hold for themselves.
