Within the spectacular musical surroundings of Chetham’s School of Music and The Stoller Hall, in the heart of Manchester, you will get the chance to work with some of the best instrumental and vocal tutors in the world and experience the UK’s leading music school.

Play and make music with like-minded young people – and make new friends from across the UK – in this week-long residential music course.

Suitable for players at Grades 4 and above, age 11-17 (vocalists age 14-17).

Each day you will take part in instrumental workshops, benefit from personalised guidance and experience singing, musicianship and ensemble music playing, with performance opportunities on a professional concert hall stage. In one fun, energised week, you’ll discover more about life as a musician and learn how to take your playing to the next level.

With an illustrious team of tutors, you will be conducted by Elizabeth Vergara Gallego and Chetham’s Director of Music, Tom Redmond. Singers will be coached by Marcus Farnsworth and Libby Burgess, whilst pianists will be led by Lulu Yang.

You’ll play pieces such as Dvorak’s Symphony No 8, Coleridge Taylor’s 4 Characteristic Waltzes, Witter-Johnson’s Fairtrade, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Marquez’s Danson no 2 and Moncayo’s Huapango.

After the music stops each evening, stay in our purpose built boarding facilities, with plenty of fun activities, games and shared experiences with Chetham’s caring team of staff. Non-residential places are also available.

Chetham’s is passionate about providing a world-class musical education regardless of financial background. Free places on this course are available for students from families in receipt of Pupil Premium or Universal Credit. Students are also able to apply for funding from Awards for Young Musicians, who support young people in overcoming financial barriers to music education.

Musical Opportunities:

Throughout your week at Chetham’s, you will receive chamber music, masterclasses, workshops and a daily one-hour choir session. There will be many opportunities for all participants to perform and learn from each other regardless of level, but the climax of the week will be the end of week performance where everyone performs together.

There will also be many opportunities to extend your knowledge by participating in our specially designed Dalcroze, Alexander Technique and Language coaching sessions. Experience all this while meeting new people, exchanging ideas and having fun in a relaxed environment.

Course breakdown

The Orchestral course includes:

–  Work with a special guest conductor

The orchestral course will help develop your skillset and confidence in orchestral playing and general musicianship. With sectionals led by Chetham’s specialist tutors, most of whom enjoy international performing careers alongside their teaching, the orchestra course will explore a range of repertoire to develop and refine orchestral technique. From tuning and listening within a section to playing orchestral solos that soar across the concert hall, you’ll work in a friendly environment that will allow your playing to blossom. All of our tutors got hooked on music while taking part on orchestral courses just like this, we cant wait to welcome you to Chetham’s to help you on your musical journey.

 

 The Vocal course includes: 

–  1-2-1 lessons with Chetham’s Head of Vocal & Choral Studies, Marcus Farnsworth

–  1-2-1 coaching sessions with Vocal Coach and Song Specialist, Libby Burgess

–  Sessions on vocal health

–  Foreign language tips

–  Masterclass with mezzo-soprano, Kathryn Rudge

–  Participation in ensemble and duet work

–  Group workshops and lessons, with the chance to socialise, make new friends and learn from other music lovers

Our vocal course will help you develop your skills and confidence in solo performance, focusing primarily on song repertoire and light / early opera repertoire where appropriate. This course will be tailored to your own vocal needs and will provide a space to explore your own voice in a friendly, encouraging and collaborative atmosphere.

 

The Piano course includes:

–  1-2-1 lessons from Chetham’s friendly, world-leading piano tutors

–  Performance classes and duet lessons, with the chance to socialise, make new friends and learn from other music lovers

–  The opportunity to perform in Chetham’s state of the art venue, The Stoller Hall

–  Daily practice time to cement new skills, supported by our expert team

Our piano course will help you learn how to manage stage fright and be a more confident performer, improve your posture to avoid injury, and make practice sessions more focused and enjoyable. Improve essential skills such as sight-reading, ensemble playing and improvisation of different musical styles. Delve deeper into harmony and style. On top of all this, enjoy performances by Chetham’s teaching staff, and attend workshops exploring how pianos are made and tuned, unearth the history of the piano and how it evolved over time, and discover contemporary piano music and techniques.

What does a typical day look like?

  • 7.00am – Wake up
  • 7.45am – Breakfast
  • 9am – Warm up and Mass Choir
  • 11.30am – Music Session 1 (Orchestra or Vocal Class or 1-2-1 lessons)
  • 1pm – Lunch
  • 2.00pm – Social activities
  • 4.00pm – Music Session 2 (Sectionals or Chamber Groups or Language class)
  • 6pm – Tea
  • 7.00pm – Social activities or Music Session 3

 

What are the social activities?
