1.45pm – Tyler Hay, Young Artists Lunchtime Recital
We are delighted to present a new series of daily lunchtime recitals by outstanding young pianists.
5.15pm – An audience with Paul Lewis
We are thrilled to welcome Paul Lewis to the Summer school. Paul, a former student of Chetham’s, is internationally regarded as one of the leading musicians of his generation. His cycles of core piano works by Beethoven and Schubert have received unanimous critical and public acclaim worldwide, and consolidated his reputation as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the central European classical repertoire.
7pm – Benjamin Frith
“Prodigy of Prodigies” was how British artist Benjamin Frith was described by Dennis Matthews when, aged just 14, he won the British national Concerto Competition. Since then, he has been a first prizewinner in the Mozart Memorial Competition (London), and was awarded top prize in the Busoni International Piano Competition.
Internationally acclaimed winner of the Artur Rubinstein competition, Benjamin Frith has appeared with many of the world’s finest orchestras including the Berlin Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Polish National Radio, and the BBC Philharmonic.
He has worked with many leading conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Antoni Wit, Vasary, Skrowaczewski, Bamert, Atzman and Barry Wordsworth. He is a member of the Gould Piano Trio and teaches at the RNCM, and Chetham’s School of Music.
8.30pm – Joanna MacGregor – The Passion of Piazzolla
Joanna MacGregor is one of the world’s most innovative musicians, appearing as a concert pianist, curator and conductor. Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and Professor of the University of London, Joanna MacGregor was the Artistic Director of Dartington International Summer School & Festival 2014-2019, Artistic Director of the Bath International Music Festival 2006-2012, and curated the multi-arts Deloitte Ignite Festival at the Royal Opera House in 2010.
As a solo pianist Joanna has performed in over eighty countries; from Europe to China, Australia, New Zealand and America. She has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, with such eminent conductors as Pierre Boulez, Colin Davis, Valery Gergiev, Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas, and has premiered many landmark works, from Harrison Birtwistle and Django Bates to John Adams and James MacMillan. A regular broadcaster, she has made over twenty appearances at the BBC Proms, including the Last Night.

Founded in 2001, the Chetham’s Piano Summer School is now firmly established as one of the most vibrant, respected and universally friendly events of its kind in the world. Participants enrol from all five continents and are inspired, guided and educated by an extraordinary faculty of over 60 internationally celebrated performer-teachers. This year promises to be no different and to enable access for audiences around the world, all major concerts will be available to watch online.
