Programme

HAYDN Piano Trio in A-flat major, Hob.XV:14
SMETANA Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15
Interval
HAYDN Piano Trio in C major, Hob.XV:C1
BRAHMS Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101

In the first of two concerts in the MCCS 26/27 to feature keyboard works, Trio Gaspard champion some of the greatest works of the piano trio repertoire. The programme includes two works by Haydn, a composer with whom the group have a special affinity as they are currently in the midst of recording all 46 of his piano trios.

Haydn’s Piano Trio in A-flat major is a piece that sparkles with humorous moments, including flourishes meant to reference folk dances and even the sound of a medieval hurdy-gurdy. Smetana’s G Minor Trio takes its own folk references to a darker place, with the ferocious tarentella dance that makes up the third movement driving to a thunderous conclusion to the first half of the performance.

The second half of this concert is a chance for all three instruments on the stage to shine in virtuosic moments, with Haydn’s Piano Trio in C Major and Brahm’s Piano Trio in C Minor showing why the group’s violinist Jonian Ilias Kadesha, cellist Vashti Hunter and pianist Nicholas Rimmer have all become successful solo artists in their own right.

Please note that student ticket availability may be limited.
