Image Letter Locking Workshop

Prior to the invention of the envelope, the senders of letters would intricately fold and ‘lock’ them, to prevent their contents from being read by prying eyes. These letter-locks ranged from relatively simple folds to creative, complicated and beautiful designs!

As part of the current theme, Codebreakers, Chetham’s Library invites you to join the lovely Emma in the Old Kitchens, and try your hand at writing and folding your own locking letters!

For information on visiting and accessibility please read our Visiting Information page.

Suitable for adults and young people aged 16+.
