Drawing on fresh perspectives and lesser explored links, this talk traces his obscure origins and uncovers his connections to Gorton and the wider Manchester area, offering a fuller picture of the man behind the legacy.

Following Chetham’s journey from modest beginnings to immense success, the talk explores how he built his fortune and established himself as a major figure in the commercial life of seventeenth century England. It places his achievements within the shifting landscape of the time, revealing how business, belief and politics were deeply intertwined.

Set against the backdrop of the Personal Rule of Charles I and the English Civil War, the story also examines Chetham’s role during a period of profound national upheaval. Through this lens, we begin to understand not only how he navigated uncertainty, but how those turbulent years helped shape his lasting impact on Manchester.
