The Jonny Mansfield Quartet presents music from Wide Step, their new album on Resonant Postcards.
Led by award-winning vibraphonist and composer Jonny Mansfield, the quartet features Will Barry on piano, Will Sach on double bass and Luke McCarthy on drums, with special guest Emmanuel Michael joining from New York on guitar. The tour celebrates the release of the band’s second album, following their acclaimed 2024 debut, Quartet! Live at Pizza Express.
A recipient of the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize and twice nominated for an Ivors Composer Award, Mansfield has established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary UK jazz as both a performer and composer. His previous projects have brought together leading musicians from across jazz and improvised music, and he has worked with artists including Yazz Ahmed, Emma Rawicz, Ivo Neame, Nikki Iles, Byron Wallen and Kit Downes.
The quartet’s debut was praised by UK Vibe for its “vibrant spontaneity and exemplary interplay”, and Wide Step develops that language further with the addition of Emmanuel Michael, whose work with artists including Chris Dave, Bill Frisell, Savannah Harris and Marcus Gilmore brings a distinctive transatlantic perspective to the project.
Combining vibrant original compositions with the spontaneity of live interaction, the Jonny Mansfield Quartet has developed a sound rooted in groove, lyricism and collective improvisation. This performance brings together a band at an exciting point in its development, presenting new music shaped by the contrasting musical perspectives of its UK and US collaborators.
This is a standing concert.
