Image INSIDE THE LIBRARY – Making History in Tudor England

Our Inside the Library sessions give visitors the opportunity to take an inside look at the workings of Chetham’s Library.

In this Inside the Library session, Chetham’s Librarian Julianne Simpson and Ellen Werner will be looking at chronicles of English history written during the Tudor period held at Chetham’s Library.

The establishment of the Tudor dynasty by Henry VII in 1485 marked an important turning point in English history. This period continues to fascinate us, from the books of Hilary Mantel to the endless television documentaries. But what did the Tudors say about themselves?

It isn’t just the contents of these published histories that are worth investigating, but also the response of Tudor readers, left in the margins of the books. Chetham’s Library is lucky to have many books with personal annotations, and we are only just beginning to investigate them in detail. Discover the Chronicles of Raphael Holinshed owned by Edward Ollerenshawe and much more in this fascinating session.

Suitable for adults and young people aged 14+.

Please see our Visiting Information page for information about visiting Chetham’s Library and accessibility.
